so i’m watching this episode of the rugrats right now. and it’s all about gender bending.

it’s summer so it’s really hot out and lil is saying how dresses are so comfortable in the heat and the boys are all saying how they’re hot and sweaty and having diaper rash. so chuckie and phil try on some of lil’s dresses to see what they’re like. lil has already explained that boys can’t wear dresses because they’re bad and only girls can wear dresses because they’re good, but the boys want to see for themselves. well some other random boys start calling phil and chuckie girls and can’t understand that they aren’t girls because only girls wear dresses. then they figure it out because chuckie isn’t wearing any underwear and then the boys get mad and try to beat up phil and chuckie for transgressing the gender binary and causing them to be confused. it’s all very complex for babies to understand. then chuckie and phil come across all of these scottish baby boys who are all wearing quilts and they find acceptance while wearing their dresses there. it’s really a moving episode. this whole time lil has been at a mother/daughter feminism empowerment play group or something so they come back right in the middle of all the confusion and get a real kick out of it all.
